Ngargin Doctors

Students being taught about using a medicine cup.

Ngargin Doctors at Barrack Heights Public School is only the third program of its kind run in Australia.

The Ngargin Doctors program involves small groups of Indigenous students and their non-Indigenous friends learning about health. They work with local Aboriginal community members and school staff in a number of weekly lessons to assist them with basic health care.

The program got its name from the local Aboriginal word for child 'ngargin', and is an initiative of the Malpa organisation.

The first group of Ngargin Doctors drew from students in Years 3 and 4. They commenced their 'training' in Term 2 and graduated in early Term 3. In Week 5 of Term 3, the second group of Year 3 and 4 students started the program, with the aim that all Aboriginal students in this age group will graduate as Ngargin Doctors by the end of the year.

2nd group graduates

The second group of Ngargin Doctors graduated on Tuesday 9th December at a special assembly held in front of their classmates, parents, carers, community members and members of the Malpa Organisation. We congratulate this new group and look forward to the knowledge they will share in the future.
